Equipped with his trusty Nikon D70s, Chong Ming Feng has been an avid photographer since 2008. As a props master, set designer and art director, his work is constantly seen on award-winning television shows. His passion lies in outdoor photography as he is constantly on the go; from panoramic city landscapes to the breathtaking scenes of the outdoors, Chong often captures long exposures in black and white as he wants his audience to see the essence of the photographs itself. Chong also considers himself a ‘cultural student’ learning and immersing himself in Malaysia’s various cultures through his photographs.

2008: Thaipusam

Thaipusam is celebrated on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (some time in January/February), paying homage to the highly revered deity Lord Murugan. In Kuala Lumpur, one million devotees converge on Batu Caves from Sri Mahamariamman temple, a 15-kilometre journey lasting approximately 8 hours and witnessed by tens of thousands of tourists. This procession culminates in a climb of 272 steps up to the Temple Cave housing the consecrated statue of Lord Murugan. Though celebrated for decades as a public holiday in many Malaysian states, 2008 was a special year for the community when former Prime Minister Tun (then Dato’ Seri) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi declared Thaipusam a public holiday in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya as well.
